“A lucky hit!” said he, to his servant, and told him to go to a beautiful bed of roses that was there, and bring him one of the finest flowers.
#LILY AND THE LION FULL#
On one side the finest flowers were in full bloom, and on the other everything looked dreary and buried in the snow. This grieved him very much, for Lily was his dearest child and as he was journeying home, thinking what he should bring her, he came to a fine castle and around the castle was a garden, in one half of which it seemed to be summertime and in the other half winter. So he kissed all three, and said goodbye.Īnd when the time came for him to go home, he had bought pearls and jewels for the two eldest, but he had sought everywhere in vain for the rose and when he went into any garden and asked for such a thing, the people laughed at him, and asked him whether he thought roses grew in snow. Now it was no easy task to find a rose, for it was the middle of winter yet as she was his prettiest daughter, and was very fond of flowers, her father said he would try. The eldest wished for pearls the second for jewels but the third, who was called Lily, said, 'Dear father, bring me a rose.' (SO infuriating.)Ī delicious, clean comfort romance to be served with hot chocolate, curled up in a soft blanket on a winter's evening.A merchant, who had three daughters, was once setting out upon a journey but before he went he asked each daughter what gift he should bring back for her. It felt authentically Regency in the way they behaved and reacted - no anachronistic names or behaviour jumped out like they do in such a regrettable number of Regencies published today.
The 'defender of the animals' thing was actually done well - it made Lily rather endearingly ridiculous, which I think was intended, and saved her from being too - well, Snow White. The book on the whole held my interest all the way through, and I found the main pair very likeable. (Honestly, those words are not from the book, and the writing isn't like that.) Don't judge based on the summary/blurb - I know it sounds awful and affected. It felt authentically Sweet and clean little Regency romance. (Honestly, those words are not from the book, and the writing isn't like that.) The book on the whole held my interest all the way through, and I found the main pair very likeable. Pure and simple, this clean romance entertained me.more The writing style of Emily Dalton was charming. There was the mild banter between Julian and Lily and the introduction of several down-on-their-luck secondary characters. I really enjoyed this traditional Regency story. It gives Lily time to see that his uncle cares for him deeply and wants him to get better. It is wintertime and everything must be done to keep Peter from becoming chilled. Their journey continues to the Ashton estate slowly. When he tries to pay her a compliment and takes her off-guard, she replies with a mild set-down. He was very handsome and used to women falling for him. There were no hidden pretenses and you could understand why Peter enjoyed her company and thought so highly of her. She was strong, intelligent and assertive without being annoying. I really enjoyed this young woman's character.
To be fair, she had been entrusted to nurse him to health and was kind but tolerant. The eldest daughter, Lily, has Peter enamored with her. Stolen from and left for dead, he is found on the side of the road by a family who do their utmost to take care of him until Julian arrives. Her son, Peter, is sickly but mending at a vicar's home some distance away. In the meantime his nephew, a soldier, had been thought of as dead when his sister received wonderful news. He soon learned the true meaning of pessimism and trusted very few people. But his two older brothers died leaving him to accept the title of Viscount and run the family's estate. The youngest of three sons, he had plans at one time to become a clergyman. Her son, Peter, is sickly but mending at a vicar's home some distance Julian Winslow, Lord Ashton, seems to have a chip on his shoulder.
